COMMUNITY DRIVEN

AXSGdWDU6Qu4FSrPrvkTqeKgvKinGDoDHFGt26iMeasIn keeping with Huey’s commitment to giving back to our community, Huey’s will be donating a percentage of sales from all 8 locations on the day of our 45th Anniversary Party (Sunday, April 26th) to local nonprofit Restore Corps.

Restore Corps is a Christian agency that exists as the primary resource point in West Tennessee for eradication of human trafficking by holistically empowering survivors, equipping communities to identify and abolish slavery, and seeking justice for the oppressed.

Human trafficking is an international crime that can be found anywhere that demand exists for commercial sex or slave labor. In March 2011, The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) released a report  based on research on sex trafficking of minors in Tennessee.

TBI Director Mark Gwynn called the results “shocking” and said that “Human trafficking and sex slavery in Tennessee is more common than previously believed possible” In fact, results show that human trafficking is a larger problem in our state than gangs and involves more counties.

During the two-year study window, Shelby County was found to be one of the worst offenders with over 100 adults and 100 children documented as trafficked for commercial sex. Victims are men, women, sons, and daughters – foreign and domestic.

Restore Corps is committed to helping solve this problem by:

  1. Providing services to survivors:immediate, emergency services;  longer term life restoration; development to decrease future vulnerability
  2. Training: Alerting schools, youth groups, professionals, and advocates to the dangers and signs of human trafficking. Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world, yet many are unaware that it happens in our own backyards.
  3. Seeking Justice: We commit to bringing justice the oppressed involved in sex trafficking by writing and petitioning support for state policies and legislation. They provide comprehensive research, assist advocacy initiatives to strengthen trafficking laws, and build better policies to protect victims and prosecute traffickers, buyers, and facilitators.

The Restore Corps team authored and lobbied for twenty-nine legislative changes, all of which are now in effect. Since January, they have received five new referrals from law enforcement.

Huey’s will also be donating a percentage of proceeds to Porter Leath.

HyphenFounded as an orphanage in 1850, Porter-Leath is now the oldest and one of the largest agency’s in Memphis. Serving over 12,000 local at-risk children and families each year through five program focus areas, our mission is empowering children and families to achieve a healthy, optimal and independent lifestyle. By focusing on the building blocks of healthy development, we not only give families access to the tools they need, but also a sense of hope. As a result, Porter-Leath is helping build stronger children, stronger families and a stronger Memphis.

Early childhood programs at Porter-Leath include Preschool, Cornerstone and Spoonfuls. Preschool prepares over 4,500 of the highest-need children each year for kindergarten. Cornerstone helps hundreds of high-risk pregnant women deliver healthy birth weight babies each year as well as trains parents to be their child’s first teacher. Spoonfuls ensures that over 500 children enjoy USDA-approved meals each day through a network of family day homes and that these homes are safe environments for the children. Social services programs are Generations and Connections. Generations provides over 130 senior citizens the opportunity to invest in the lives of over 4,000 children through mentoring. Each senior spends over 1000 hours a year in an early childhood setting. Connections is Porter-Leath’s historical core, providing a safe, nurturing environment for youth in foster care and children who are runaway/homeless.
