Huey’s has partnered with GAIA to use the grassy property at 1895 Madison Avenue, at the corner of Barksdale and Madison in Midtown Memphis, as a garden. On February 15th, GAIA will have control of the property to grow a vegetable, herb, and flower garden, with all product to be donated to local food banks and homeless shelters.

The garden will showcase greens, tomatoes, carrots, beans, broccoli, beets, squash, herbs, and wildflowers in raised beds. In February, GAIA will plant all seedings into pots. In March, April, and May, they will transfer all plants into the raised beds. They will harvest all products throughout the year to donate.

In addition to growing fresh produce, herbs, and flowers for local food banks and shelters, GAIA will also use the space for a water collection site and to host field trips for local schools. The garden may use Kronos, an alternate energy source that uses 20 foot tall wind turbines.

GAIA is a non-profit organization that works to create examples of sustainability, combined with economic development and social responsibility. Their mission is to create awareness about the plight of the environment, to educate the public about caring for our planet, humanity and the environment, to run recycling operations and to support environmental projects and programs locally and globally. Their first chapter originiated in Chicago in 1999, and they now have 8 chapters across the nation.
